    Description

    Doxt-SL® capsules are produced by Dr. Reddy.

    The raw materials of the medication are Doxycycline and Lactobacillus. Doxycycline is semisynthetic tetracycline class antibiotic of broad-spectrum, also known as antimalarials agent. Lactic Acid Bacillus (Lactobacillus) is a live microorganism used in the treatment of diarrhea, infectious diarrhea and diarrhea associated with taking antibiotics.

    Indications:

    - respiratory tract infections (tonsillitis, pharyngitis, otitis, sinusitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, bronchopneumonia);

    - biliary tract infection;

    - urogenital infections (urethritis, cystitis, pyelonephritis, prostatitis);

    - infections of the pelvis;

    - intestinal infections (intestinal amebiasis and etc.);

    - infections of the skin and soft tissues (impetigo, cellulitis, furunculosis, acne, infected traumatic and postoperative wounds);

    - other infections (osteomyelitis, thrombophlebitis, ophthalmia).

    Doxt-SL® may prevent infection with scrub typhus, traveler's diarrhea, leptospirosis infections.

    Doxt-SL® is not intended to treat viral infections (cold, flu) as well as yeast infections.

    MOA (mechanism of action):

    Doxycycline has antiprotozoal, antibacterial and antihelminthic effects. Doxycycline blocks the synthesis of essential for bacteria proteins, which guarantee bacteria functioning. Doxycycline is effectiv against Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Pneumococcus, Salmonella typhi, Shigella, Klebciella, Morganella morgani, Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae, Clostridium, Bacteroides, Fusobacterium, Legionella pneumophila. Adequate Lactobacillus amount restores the balance of good microorganisms in the gut that may get upset during taking antibiotics or due to intestinal infections.

    Dosage

    Swallow the Doxt-SL® capsules whole with a full glass of water/with food/milk.

    Doxt-SL® is an adult drug and cannot be used in children under 12 years.

    Adults, elderly and children 12 years or over:

    The recommended dose is 200 mg on the first day as a single or two 100 mg doses, followed by 100 mg per day.

    For severe infections the daily dose may be increased to 200 mg per day.

    The treatment duration is minimum 10 days.

    Doxt-SL® for specific infections:

    Acne vulgaris – 50mg a day for 6-12 weeks.

    Sexually transmitted disease – 100 mg twice per day for 7-10 days.

    Syphilis – 300 mg a day in divided doses for 10 days.

    Fevers caused by lice or ticks – a single dose of 100-200 mg for 7-10 days.

    Malaria – 200 mg a day during 7 days, should be given with other drugs such as quinine.

    Doxt-SL® for preventing:

    Infection with scrub typhus – 200 mg as a single dose.

    Traveler's diarrhea – 200 mg on the first day of travel followed by 100 mg a day throughout the duration of the stay. Do not use for more than 3 weeks unless advised by your doctor.

    Leptospirosis infections – 200 mg once a week throughout the stay in the infected area and 200 mg at the end of the trip. Do not use for more than 3 weeks unless directed by your doctor.

    Missing a dose

    If you miss a dose you should take it as soon as you remember about your missing. If it is the time for the next dose you should continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose of Doxt-SL® to compensate the missed dose.

    Overdose

    If an overdose occurs and you are not feeling well, stop taking the medication immediately. You should seek emergency medical attention or contact your healthcare provider immediately.

    Storage

    Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F) and away from excess moisture and heat. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date. Keep out of the reach of children.

    Side effects occurrence does not only depend on the medication you are taking, but also on your overall health and other factors.

    Contraindications

    Doxt-SL® cannot be given to children weighing less than 40 kg and those who are under 12 years.

    Do not take Doxt-SL® capsules if you are allergic to Doxycycline, other similar antibiotics (such as Minocycline or Tetracycline).

    Do not take Doxt-SL® capsules if you are allergic to Lactobacillus or other ingredients comprised in Doxt-SL®.

    Do not take Doxt-SL® if you have a history of severe allergic reactions associated with using antibiotics.

    Do not take Doxt-SL® if you have liver disease or are taking medications affecting your liver.

    Do not take Doxt-SL® if you have porphyria (a genetic disorder of the blood).

    Do not take Doxt-SL® if you suffer from myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness, difficulty chewing and swallowing and slurred speech).

    Apply sunblock if you are going sunbathe while taking Doxycycline, as it makes your skin more sensitive to sunlight.

    Do not take Doxt-SL® if you have systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) (face rash, hair loss, fever, malaise and joint pain).

    Do not take Doxt-SL® if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medications: anticoagulants (warfarin); penicillin or rifampicin; antacids containing aluminium, calcium or magnesium or other medications containing iron, bismuth or zinc salts; phenobarbital, carbamazepine, phenytoin or primidone (to treat epilepsy); methoxyflurane (an anaesthetic); ciclosporin (used following organ transplants).

    If you are taking birth control pills, use additional contraceptives while taking Doxt-SL® and till 7 days after stopping Doxt-SL®.

    Your skin can become more sensitive to sunburn while taking Doxt-SL®. Apply sunblock if you have to go out into the sun.

    Do not take any vitamin supplements two hours before or after taking Doxt-SL®.

    Do not take any medications with bismuth (Pepto-Bismol, Kaopectate) while taking Doxt-SL®.

    Consult your doctor before taking Doxt-SL® if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

    Doxt-SL® is not recommended for use in patients weighing less than 40 kg and those who are under 12 years.
