Besivance ophthalmic solution is used as eye drops for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis (inflammation of the conjunctiva) in patients over 1 year of age. Besivance eye drops work locally on the eye surface so that the solution shouldn't be injected.

Active Ingredient
Description
Besivance ophthalmic solution's raw material is Besifloxacin – a fourth-generation antibiotic from the Fluoroquinolone family (also known as Quinolones). It is the only topical ophthalmic chlorofluoroquinolone.
Indications:
- bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible microorganisms.
MOA (mechanism of action):
Besifloxacin provides potent inhibition of bacterial DNA replication. It binds to bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV enzymes. This suppresses enzymatic function and results in split DNA strands. Finally, DNA fragmentation and interfering with DNA replication ultimately cause bacterial cell death. Besifloxacin has been shown to be active against Aerococcus viridans, CDC coryneform group G, Corynebacterium pseudodiphtheriticum, Corynebacterium striatum, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Moraxella lacunata, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus hominis, Staphylococcus lugdunensis, Staphylococcus warneri, Streptococcus mitis group, Streptococcus oralis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus salivarius).
Dosage
Instill into the treated eye(s) 3 times a day, 4 to 12 hours apart, for 7 days.
Use Besifloxacin eye drops at around the same times every day.
Precautions:
Besifloxacin solution is not for injection.
Besifloxacin solution is associated with allergic reactions, even following a single dose. Discontinue using drops immediately and contact your physician at the first sign of a rash or allergic reaction.
Prolonged use of Besivance ophthalmic solution may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi. If superinfection occurs, discontinue using these drops and institute alternative therapy.
Avoid contaminating the applicator tip with eye, fingers or another source.
Besivance ophthalmic solution contains the preservative benzalkonium chloride, which may cause eye irritation.
Besivance eye drops may cause your vision to blur temporarily after you have applied them into your eye. Do not drive or operate machinery until this has worn off.
Patients should not wear contact lenses while using Besifloxacin solution for eye infection.
Wash your hands before using the eye drops.
Missing a dose
If you miss a dose you should instill it as soon as you remember about your missing. If it is the time for the next dose you should continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not instill a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Overdose
If an overdose occurs and you are not feeling well, stop taking the medication immediately. You should seek emergency medical attention or contact your healthcare provider immediately. A topical overdose of Besivance ophthalmic solution may be flushed from the eye(s) with lukewarm tap water.
Storage
Store at cool room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Do not freeze. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Use within one month after opening a container. Keep out of the reach of children.
