General Info

Nevimune® is an antiviral drug indicated for treatment and control of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV-1) infection in 16 years old adults with weight 50 kg or more. Nevimune® is only taken together with other anti-retroviral medications. Note, that neither Nevimune® nor another drug can cure HIV.

Nevimune®
Active Ingredient

Nevirapine.

Description

Nevimune® is manufactured by Cipla. The main component comprised in Nevimune® is Nevirapine – a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI).

Indications:

- treatment of HIV type 1 infection, as a part highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART).

MOA (mechanism of action):

Nevirapine is a synthetic non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase (RT) inhibitor with potent antiviral activity. Reverse transcriptase is an enzyme responsible for HIV multiplying. Nevirapine inhibits reverse transcriptase from and thus helps to reduce HIV viral load, halt or avert damage to the immune system and decreasing the risk of developing AIDS. Nevirapine isn't active against HIV-2.

Dosage

The recommended dose is 200 mg per day for the first 14 days of treatment ("lead-in" period). After 14 days, the usual dose is 200 mg twice a day.

It is very important that you take only one 200 mg Nevimune® tablet a day for the first 14 days. If you have developed rash during this period, do not increase the dose but consult your doctor.

The 14-day "lead-in" period has been shown to lower the risk of skin rash.

As Nevimune® must always be taken together with other HIV anti-retroviral drugs, you should follow the instructions for the other medications carefully.

Precautions:

During the first 18 weeks of taking Nevimune® watch out for symptoms of liver or skin reactions (e.g., fever, blistering, mouth sores, inflammation of the eye, swelling of the face, general swelling, shortness of breath, muscle or joint pain, general feelings of illness, abdominal pain). These can become severe and even life-threatening. Patient is at greatest risk of such reaction in the period of the first 6 weeks.

Additional symptoms to look for include ulcers in the mouth, throat, nose, genitals, and conjunctivitis.

These potentially life-threatening skin reactions often appear with flu-like symptoms. The rash may progress to widespread blistering or exfoliating of the skin.

If while using Nevimune® you have developed Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis, you must not be restarted on Nevimune® at any time.

If you develop a rash or aforementioned skin symptoms, seek immediate medical advice and tell about taking Nevimune®.

Stop taking Nevimune® immediately if you experience symptoms of the liver damage (loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, yellow skin (jaundice), abdominal pain).

If while using Nevimune® you have developed severe liver, skin or allergic reactions, never take Nevimune® until your doctor tells you to do so.

The following individuals are at increased risk of developing liver problems: women, infected with hepatitis B or C, those with abnormal liver function tests, treatment-naive patients with higher CD4 cell count at the beginning of Nevimune® therapy (women more than 250 cells/mm3, men more than 400 cells/mm3), pre-treated patients with detectable HIV-1 plasma viral load and higher CD4 cell count at the beginning of Nevimune® therapy (women more than 250 cells/mm3, men more than 400 cells/mm3).

HIV can be transmitted through sexual contact with HIV positive partner, blood (e.g., sharing needles, handling blood instruments, receiving blood transfusions, blood products, or organ/tissue transplants that were infected with HIV), childbirth, toiletries (razors and toothbrushes). Therefore, both HIV-positive and HIV-negative individuals are advised to have any kind of sex using a latex or polyurethane condom, avoid sharing needles or other things like toothbrushes or razors. It is important to discuss with doctor the precautions needed to avoid infecting other people as well as take precautions not to get infected.

Women who are HIV-positive must not breastfeed because HIV infection can be passed on to the baby in breast milk.

Some people who take Daruvir® may experience:

- Symptoms of inflammation from previous infections.

- Autoimmune reactions (conditions that occur when the immune system attacks healthy body tissue).

- Changes in body fat.

- A bone disease called osteonecrosis (death of bone tissue caused by loss of blood supply to the bone).

Missing a dose

If you miss a dose you should take it as soon as you remember about your missing. If it is the time for the next dose you should continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose of Nevimune® to compensate the missed dose.

Overdose

If an overdose occurs and you are not feeling well, stop taking the medication immediately. You should seek emergency medical attention or contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Storage

Store Nevimune® tablets or oral powder at room temperature between 68-77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C). Keep Nevimune® in the original container. Do not use Nevimune® if the seal over the bottle opening is broken or missing. Keep the bottle tightly closed. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date. Keep out of the reach of children.
